Bound the transmissions kitty-graphics holds part-way through Nothing evicted a partial: an image started with m=1 and never completed held its accumulator for the life of the terminal. Measured by the soak oracle on 2026-08-29, 200,000 unfinished chunks under distinct i= values retained 3.31 bytes per input byte and evicted none, in a map keyed by a number the writer chose. A single id had no ceiling at all, bounded only by how many bytes the writer felt like sending. Reachability is a graphics protocol parsed from any program's stdout. The protocol says nothing about abandoned transmissions, so the shape comes from two things it does say. A client "must finish sending all chunks for a single image before sending any other graphics related escape codes", so the conformant number of concurrent transfers is one. And when quota runs short, "existing images without placements will be preferentially deleted", so dropping unfinished work to make room is in keeping. - MAX_IN_FLIGHT_TRANSMISSIONS = 16, evicting the least recently advanced. Sixteen rather than the protocol's one because interleaving is something this parser has always handled correctly, and a client doing something the protocol forbids is no reason to start corrupting it. What sixteen refuses is the id space, which is where the attack was. - MAX_IN_FLIGHT_BYTES = 64 MiB, shared across every transfer rather than one budget each, so the ceiling does not multiply by sixteen. Sized off what a real image is: a full-screen 4K RGBA frame is about 33 MB and kitty's own default quota for every image it holds is 320 MB. Reaching it costs 85 MB of PTY traffic, so there is no amplification either. Checked against a chunk's decoded upper bound before the accumulator is resized, since that arithmetic runs over a length the writer chose. An over-budget transfer is marked rather than removed, so its closing m=0 chunk cannot read as a fresh single-shot image and hand the host a tail as a whole picture; it completes as nothing. Eviction shrinks the table, because a burst of 200,000 ids would otherwise leave the slots allocated after the entries went. The oracle asserts both halves. MAX_RETAINED_PER_INPUT_BYTE drops 64 to 4, which the shape bounds at 1.5: an accumulator caught past a doubling holds twice its length, and base64 costs the writer four bytes for every three it lands. A ratio can never see the single-id half, which grew at 0.76, so MAX_RETAINED_BYTES is new and computed from the budget. Both were verified against the pre-eviction parser: the id-space witness trips the ratio at 2,000 ids, the single-id witness trips the absolute at two and a half budgets. Two inputs in fuzz/regressions/ and a replay in tests/regressions.rs at sizes no committed file should carry. Closes the kitty-graphics half of the 2026-08-29 soak finding.
