# Stripe: What You Need to Know

Makenotwork uses [Stripe]https://stripe.com as its payment processor. This page collects the Stripe-specific details that affect your costs, payouts, and operations as a creator.

## Processing Fees

Stripe charges a per-transaction fee on every fan payment. The exact rate depends on your country:

| Region | Rate |
|--------|------|
| United States | {{ stripe.percent | percent }} + {{ stripe.fixed | money }} |
| Canada | 2.9% + C$0.30 |
| United Kingdom | 1.5% + 20p (domestic), 3.25% + 20p (EU) |
| EU (most countries) | 1.5% + €0.25 (domestic), 3.25% + €0.25 (cross-border) |
| Australia | 1.75% + A$0.30 (domestic), 3.5% + A$0.30 (international) |
| Japan | 3.6% |

These rates change. Check [stripe.com/pricing]https://stripe.com/pricing for your country's current rates.

### The Flat Fee Matters on Small Transactions

The per-transaction flat fee ({{ stripe.fixed | money }} in the US) has a bigger impact on small sales:

| Sale price | Stripe fee (US) | Effective rate | You keep |
|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| $1 | {{ derived.stripe_fee_on_1 | money }} | 33% | {{ derived.stripe_keep_on_1 | money }} |
| $5 | {{ derived.stripe_fee_on_5 | money }} | 9% | {{ derived.stripe_keep_on_5 | money }} |
| $10 | {{ derived.stripe_fee_on_10 | money }} | 5.9% | {{ derived.stripe_keep_on_10 | money }} |
| $25 | {{ derived.stripe_fee_on_25 | money }} | 4.1% | {{ derived.stripe_keep_on_25 | money }} |
| $50 | {{ derived.stripe_fee_on_50 | money }} | 3.5% | {{ derived.stripe_keep_on_50 | money }} |

Bundling items (albums, packs) reduces the per-item impact of the flat fee.

## Payout Timing

You choose your payout schedule in your [Stripe dashboard]https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payouts:

| Schedule | When funds arrive |
|----------|-------------------|
| Standard | 2-3 business days |
| Daily | Next business day |
| Weekly | Your chosen day of the week |
| Monthly | First of the month |
| Instant | Immediately (Stripe fee, regional; see Instant Payouts below) |

Timing and fees here are Stripe's and change without us knowing. Your Stripe dashboard is authoritative.

### First Payout

New Stripe accounts typically have a 7-14 day hold on first payouts while Stripe verifies your account. After the initial hold clears, your chosen schedule applies.

### Minimum Payout

Stripe requires a minimum balance before initiating a payout. In most regions this is $1 (or equivalent). You can set a higher threshold in your Stripe dashboard if you prefer larger, less frequent payouts.

---

## Currency

You are paid in one currency, and every price you set is in it. We read it from your Stripe account rather than asking you to choose, so it always matches the account the money lands in.

Supported: USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD, EUR. If your Stripe account settles in something else, you cannot sell here yet. Write to info@makenot.work and tell us which one you need.

There is no per-project or per-fan currency. One creator, one currency, every price.

### What Your Fans See

If a fan's card is in your currency, they pay your price and nothing converts.

If it is not, they choose at checkout who converts:

- **Stripe converts, and shows them the total in their own currency before they pay.** Stripe's rate includes a conversion fee it sets between 2% and 4%. We cannot show that fee as its own line, because Stripe does not report it separately to us; what we can do is tell them the range, and Stripe shows them the exact total on its own checkout page before they commit. Their receipt then records the exact amount they were charged.
- **Their bank converts.** They pay in your currency and their card issuer converts at its own rate. We cannot show that rate or estimate it, and we say so rather than guessing.

Either way the fan carries the conversion, and you receive your price.

### What You Receive

Your price, in your currency. Because the charge is created in the currency your Stripe account settles in, there is no conversion between the sale and your balance.

One exception: a **revenue split** from another creator's project arrives in *that project's* currency. If it differs from yours, Stripe converts it when it reaches you, and the conversion comes out of your share. You will see this called out on your Payments tab.

### Minimum Charge

Stripe enforces a minimum per transaction and it is not the same everywhere: $0.50 USD, CAD, AUD, NZD and EUR 0.50, but GBP 0.30. We block sub-minimum charges before they reach Stripe, for single items and cart totals alike. Free items (price 0) are unaffected.

---

## Stripe Tax

Stripe offers automatic tax calculation and collection. When enabled, Stripe determines the correct sales tax, VAT, or GST rate based on the buyer's location and adds it at checkout.

### Enabling Stripe Tax

Toggle Stripe Tax from your payment settings on Makenotwork. Once enabled, it applies to all your checkout sessions (purchases, memberships, tips).

### What Stripe Tax Handles

- Rate calculation based on buyer location (see [Stripe Tax]https://stripe.com/tax for covered jurisdictions)
- Collection at checkout
- Tax reporting through your [Stripe Tax dashboard]https://dashboard.stripe.com/tax

### What You Still Handle

- **Registration**: You must register for tax collection in each jurisdiction where you have obligations. Stripe Tax tells you where you owe, but you register yourself.
- **Remittance**: You file and pay collected taxes to the relevant authorities.
- **Thresholds**: Monitor your sales volume by jurisdiction. Stripe Tax reports help with this.

See [You're the Merchant of Record]../about/merchant-of-record.md#tax-tools-available-to-you for guidance on when to pay attention to cross-border tax obligations.

---

## Chargeback Protection

Stripe offers its own [Chargeback Protection]https://stripe.com/radar/chargeback-protection product at 0.4% of transaction volume. It covers fraud-related chargebacks (stolen cards, unauthorized use). It does not cover "product not as described" or "unrecognized" disputes.

You can enable it from your Stripe dashboard under Radar settings. This is a Stripe product, not a Makenotwork feature.

---

## Stripe Account Ownership

Your Stripe connected account belongs to you. It is not controlled by Makenotwork.

- If you leave Makenotwork, your Stripe account stays with you
- Your transaction history, payout records, and tax documents remain in your Stripe dashboard
- You can use the same Stripe account with other platforms or your own website

---

## Country Availability

Two conditions, both required:

- **Stripe Connect supports your country.** See [Stripe Global]https://stripe.com/global for the current list. If it does not, you cannot receive payouts through Makenotwork, and we offer no alternative payment processor.
- **Your Stripe account settles in a currency we support.** USD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD or EUR (see [Currency]#currency). An account that settles in anything else cannot sell here yet, even when Connect supports the country. Check your Stripe account's default currency before you build a catalog.

The second condition is the one creators miss. Country support and currency support are separate questions at Stripe, and we depend on both.

If either affects you, contact us at info@makenot.work.

## Instant Payouts

Available in [supported countries]https://docs.stripe.com/payouts/instant-payouts. Stripe charges 1% in CA, EU, UK, SG, NO, HK, MY; 1.5% in US, AU, NZ, AE (minimum $0.50). Funds arrive in your bank account within minutes.

Availability depends on your bank and region. Check your Stripe dashboard to see if instant payouts are available for your account.
